Deregulation of the electricity market throughout the UK was complete in
May 1999. All households may now choose which company supplies their gas,
electricity and telephone services.
Competition has lead to lower prices and some energy companies now offer new
services like telecoms or financial services. Moreover, like banks,
some utilities provide access to customer accounts on the internet and
also bill payment facilities.
